How To Speak Hip
How To Speak Hip is a record made in 1959 by comedian and actor Del Close, which aims to be an instructional series on how to sound like a hip beatnik. You can listen to the entire album chapter by chapter on How To Speak Hip. Click the gem on the buddha's head to start listening, and pull his ears to go back and forth by track. Particularily brilliant highlights of this record are track two, Basic Hip, in which the beatnik character
Geetz Romo (pictured at right), tries to explain the concept of digging, or to dig, and track three, Vocabulary Building, where we learn how to use such phrases as Dig the chick, Dig the cat, and Dig the shades on the cat. Also worth linking to is Basic Hip Digital Oddio, which "collects records from the fifties, sixties and beyond, focusing on soundtracks, pop instrumentals and incredibly strange music", and from whom I stole the Geetz Romo picture. Dig yourself, baby.Picking Up Girls Made Easy
Okay, this one I'm a little less sure about. Press date from the back cover says 1975, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out whether or not it was trying to be serious. After a little internet searching for the name on the back, Eric Weber, it turns out that he's actually written books about dating and picking up too, so I guess it's for real. This one goes through 8 different scenarios, covering such essential topics as The Street Pickup, Museum Pickup
, and even the Women's Clothing Store Pickup, teaching you how to pick up girls "automatically". Unfortunately, the whole album is only available in One Long MP3 File, but it's still worth a listen. Apparently, "picking up girls can be as easy as opening a beer!" I wonder if anyone's ever bought this with serious intentions. Probably so. And finally, follow along with Billy as he learns what it takes to truly be emo in this brilliant mock 1950's instructional video.
