Yesterday, I decided to pop into Reverb Central, which has been like a surf music bible to me over the years. It's maintained by a gentleman by the name of Phil Dirt, who is a (former?) radio DJ and producer in Santa Cruz, California with an enormous passion for surf music. I actually check out his site a fair bit when I'm in the mood to pick up some new surf records, and his reviews always seem to be bang on. When we released Operation: Jet Set!, I sent him a copy to have a listen to, and he's just posted a review of our CD (track by track no less) on his site... And what's more awesome: five stars! Check it out!The Reverb Syndicate - Operation Jet Set
Much of the music here is very inviting from an arrangement and playing perspective, as well as lovely tone. My chief concern here is the left-right guitar spread that relegates the lead to a lesser roll, and allows the rhythm to compete for attention instead of complimenting the melody line, and drums that are occasionally overbearing in the mix. Those things aside, the Reverb Syndicate have a number of very good songs here, and I found myself enjoying it more the more I listened.
So cool. So very cool.
